Sad news - death of GRCC Trustee, Phil Awford.

We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Phil Awford, who has been a member of the GRCC Board of Trustees since 2018, contributing in particular to our work in the Tewkesbury area, and our affordable housing work.

Phil Awford, deceased, GRCC Trustee from 2018 to 2023

“Phil made an invaluable contribution to GRCC, with his extensive network of contacts, his deep and wide knowledge of the workings of local government, and his particular interest and expertise in environmental and flood alleviation matters,” said Charles Coats, Chair of the GRCC Board of Trustees.

“Phil’s support, wisdom and insights were very much valued, and his contributions to Board discussions were always timely and relevant.  Above all though, I respected his opinions, and valued his friendship, his quiet sense of humour, and his company. He will be much missed by us all.”

Barbara Piranty, GRCC CEO, added “Phil was always supportive of GRCC, with a keen interest in environmental and housing issues. He provided invaluable insight and advice and was always willing to go the extra mile when needed. He was a lovely man and friend, and will be greatly missed.”

Phil had a long record of public service, as a member of Highnam Parish Council, Tewkesbury Borough Council, and Gloucestershire County Council.   During his 22 years as a County Councillor, Phil chaired numerous high-profile County Council committees, and was overall chair of the County Council in 2014 and 2015.
