Perinatal and Infant Mental Health (PIMH) Awareness Workshops

GRCC's Parent Champion Project Co-ordinator and PIMH Champion Paula Cawte is arranging a free workshop for practitioners and volunteers who work with parents, children and families in Gloucestershire to raise awareness of Perinatal and Infant Mental Health (PIMH).

PIMH has a significant impact on the sufferer but also on their family.  This can be of particular concern for rapidly developing infants in the absence of other carers able to provide the quality emotional contact every infant needs.

This workshop is intended to equip people working with children and families with an understanding of what PIMH is, and what help is available.  The main objectives for the day include:

  • Understand the importance of good PIMH for the individual, family and society
  • Be aware of the clinical features of the most common perinatal mental conditions
  • Appreciate the effects and potential impact of perinatal mental illness in the antenatal period
  • Recognise how parental mental illness can affect the child across the life course
  • Have increased awareness of the risks associated with with perinatal mental illness related to suicide and safeguarding
  • Understand the impact of stigma in relation to perinatal and infant mental health
  • Have increased awareness of some of the challenges in, and opportunities for, supporting families experiencing or at risk of perinatal and infant mental health problems
  • Understand the range of interventions and help available (locally and nationally) and know when and how to access these.

The workshop will be delivered by PIMH Champions from a variety of professional backgrounds who have received training from the Institute of Health Visiting.  It is free to attend and will run from 9am to 5pm.  The dates arranged are:

  • Wednesday, 13th December 2017 - GRCC offices
  • Wednesday, 7th February 2018 - central Gloucester, venue TBC
