Digital switchover
GRCC has been appointed as Lead Organisation by Digital Outreach Ltd for the area served by the Ridge Hill transmitter group.
Television across the UK is going Digital. This means the existing analogue TV signal will be switched off and replaced with a new, stronger digital TV signal. The Central TV region served by the Ridge Hill transmitter group (covering Herefordshire, south Shropshire and parts of Gloucestershire) will start to switch to digital on 6th April 2011, to be completed by 20th April 2011.
To find out which transmitter you receive your TV signal from and so when you will be switching over, go to the Digital UK website http://www.digitaluk.co.uk and enter your details in the postcode checker, or contact Digital UK on 08456 505050.
How can GRCC help?
As Lead Organisation, GRCC is working with the voluntary and community sector in the run-up to the digital TV switchover. We can provide grants, materials, free training, support and guidance to enable organisations in the voluntary and community sector to signpost the people they support.
We know that people may be worried about the switch to digital TV. Experience in regions which have already switched over shows that they turn to local organisations that they know and trust for information and advice. We can help by providing organisations with:
• Free briefing sessions to enable staff and volunteers to feel confident to give Switchover and Switchover Help Scheme advice to people they support
• The Small Grant Programme funds events, activities and initiatives that get Switchover and Help Scheme information to as many people as possible
• Leaflets and promotional material are available free, for use at events and activities
GRCC has also been commissioned to assist in publicising the Switchover Help Scheme. For more information, you can download the Switchover Help Scheme leaflet.
What will the Small Grants Programme fund?
Grants are available for voluntary and community sector organisations to help raise awareness of the Switchover from analogue to digital television.
You can apply if your organisation works with:
- Older people
- People who are socially isolated
- Those with sensory, mobility or dexterity impairments
- Those who have English as a second language
- People with learning difficulties
- People who have experienced mental health conditions
What kind of projects have received grants?
- Transport for those less mobile so they can get to a Switchover event that they otherwise would have missed
- A portable digital TV to be used at a series of events to demonstrate how to re-tune
- The cost of running a session about Switchover
- Tea, coffee and cakes to encourage people to attend a Switchover event
- The cost of a ‘Switchover Advice’ stall at a local fair
All we ask in return is that organisations report back on their activity after the event, to let us know how many people took part.
