People For You is an established and well regarded volunteer befriending and support service, aimed at the many older, isolated and vulnerable people living in the Lechlade, Fairford, Tetbury and surrounding area of the South Cotswolds. The overall aim of the project is to reduce isolation and is entirely supported by local volunteers who offer a free, confidential service and the only one of its kind in the area.
A volunteer visitor calling regularly each week, offering friendship and a listening ear has a positive impact on a client’s state of mind, their sense of wellbeing and community belonging. Meaningful social interaction helps build resilience and the ability to cope with factors that affect mental and physical health. Many of the older people supported by the project are disabled, have mobility issues, are housebound or perhaps in the early stages of dementia. Recruitment of volunteers takes place on a regular basis to cope with the demand for the service.
“Companionship, exchange of interests, friendship, advice, practical assistance when desired. Also, having you yourself as organiser and friend whom we can always approach. And thank you for your help in securing me the Attendance Allowance.” Client feedback - 2010
“I feel Mrs V’s mental and physical health has improved beyond all recognition. She has great interest in history and has been reading and discussing widely for the last 12 months.” Volunteer Feedback – 2010
